Grade II listed railway viaduct

Client: Network Rail
Location: Littleborough, near Rochdale
Reference No: CS009

Designed by George Stephenson and completed in 1839, this historically significant viaduct is Grade II listed and carries railway lines over the busy A58 intersection at Littleborough.

Defects

  • Due to long-term effects of normal wear and tear, compounded by a shallow depth of fill above, this seven span viaduct was showing a variety of structural faults.
  • The principle arch had developed five longitudinal cracks creating a series of arches and further weakening the structure.
  • Vehicle impact damage to the barrel and stonework voussoirs on the spandrel walls.

A number of solutions were considered by English Heritage, Network Rail and its framework contractor, Edmund Nuttall, but none could solve the technical problems without adversely affecting the appearance.

Helifix Solution

  • A systematic bespoke approach using a combination of concealed Helibeam bed joint reinforcement and pinning, using grouted CemTies, to reinstate full structural integrity.
  • Specialist masonry repairs to improve damaged stonework.
  • Rail services totally unaffected.
  • All works completed on schedule and to budget.
  • Viaduct sympathetically restored both structurally and visually.
